The self-guided tours are for anyone who would like to learn about the ecology and flora of Somme Prairie Grove. The text and map of each tour are meant to be carried during a walk around the site, so you can look at the ecosystem and see the species and their relationships while reading the histories, comments, and questions.

The winter tours are for the brave souls who enjoy nature when the stark landscape hunkers down, frost forms on dry golden leaves, and glistening snow stays pure white all season. The winter guides are not accompanied by a map (because in winter it’s often too cold to fumble with maps). Read the winter tour guides before you go out. They provide previews to what you might watch for in the winter landscape.

Field Seminars

These field seminars are for people with some background in ecological restoration who would like to learn from the 25 years of restoration efforts at Somme Prairie Grove. The text and map of each seminar are meant to be carried during a walk around the site, so the person participating in the seminar can look at the ecosystem and see the species and their relationships while reading the histories, comments and questions.

The Savanna Restoration and Woodland Restoration below are just the first of such field seminars — additional seminars will appear over time.
